Reduced outer diameter flat washers are meant for machine screws, cheese head screws, socket head screws. The smaller outer diameter is great for tight clearance applications. One surface of washers is chamfered, the other is not.
Flat washers are placed under a bolt head or nut to evenly distribute the load of the fastener over a wider area. Washers also provide a smooth bearing surface against the parent material, protecting it and preventing damage.
